Black pepper in Indonesia: Overview
Black pepper in Indonesia is widely grown and consumed. This spice is widely used to give meals a spicy flavor. Not only in Indonesian cuisine but also in eastern meals, pepper is frequently used as a condiment, especially in spicy dishes. There are four types of pepper: white pepper, black pepper, green pepper, and red pepper. Each type of pepper is processed differently and the taste is not the same.
Black pepper in Indonesia is the most popular type of pepper. Typically, this spice is applied at the end of the cooking process. The use of black pepper in cooking imparts a slightly spicy flavor. The smell of the dish also gets more fragrant and delectable. In terms of production, black pepper is created from fruit that is not quite ripe but contains sufficient substance. The harvest is then sun-dried to remove the skin. An oxidation reaction occurs during the process, turning the green color black. Black pepper has a strong spicy flavor as a result of this processing.

We are going to expose you to three different types of black pepper in Indonesia for black pepper’s taste test: Sarawak pepper, Lampung pepper, and Java long pepper.
Sarawak pepper
Sarawak pepper is one type of black pepper in Indonesia that is grown in Borneo and is a superb type with similarities to Vietnamese and Kampot pepper. This is a great all-purpose black pepper in Indonesia that is significantly less expensive than true Kampot pepper but still has the refreshing minty and eucalyptus undertones that are characteristic of Southeast Asian peppercorns.
Lampung pepper
Lampung pepper is a well-known type of black pepper in Indonesia for its fiery pungency, flavor, and scent. They are little, have a fruity flavor, and are sharp on the tip of the tongue. The dark shiny matt kernels look lovely in a pepper mill.
Lampung is home to around 29.000 farmers of black pepper in Indonesia. Smallholders with land parcels ranging from 0.2 to 1.5 hectares. They are not as huge as a football field on average. Farmer cooperatives possess a larger tract of land, up to 10 hectares.
Rubber, cassava, and palm oil are also harvested in addition to pepper. Pepper is viewed as a complementary crop to coffee (Northern Lampung) or cassava/tapioca (Eastern Lampung).
Java long pepper
Java long pepper (also known as pippali, jaborand pepper, and bengali pepper) has a eucalyptus/ginger flavor, is slightly sweeter, has a deeper flavor, and is sharper than regular black pepper in Indonesia.
It was commonly utilized in the past, but as black pepper in Indonesia became more popular and easier and cheaper to grow, Java Pepper has become increasingly scarce.
Long pepper has dry wood scents with powerful eucalyptus flavors in the mouth and is great with red meat in particular, as well as holding its own in intensely flavored meals such as a curry or a tagine.
