7 Things You May Not Know When Choosing A Long Grain Rice Supplier

Nowadays, long grain rice suppliers play a vital role as the demand for this product increases. However, with the emergence of many types of rice with unknown origins in the market, consumers are becoming increasingly concerned. In this article, K-Agriculture will share 7 things you should know to choose high-quality long grain rice suppliers.

An overview of long grain rice suppliers:

Rice is one of the most common cereal grains worldwide, grown on every continent except Antarctica. According to statistics, there are currently more than 40,000 different rice varieties, which people use as a staple food in their daily meals. Among them, long grain rice is the most popular and widely preferred type of rice.

What is long grain rice?

As the name implies, long grain rice is slender and elongated, nearly four to five times longer than wide. This type of rice is further classified into subtypes like long-grain white and brown rice, Basmati rice, and Jasmine rice. When cooked, the grains of long grain rice retain their firmness and separate from each other, giving a fluffy texture. It is widely used in different Asian cuisines for preparing main dishes, salads, and pilafs.

Long grain rice suppliers’ general information

Long grain rice suppliers are businesses that specialize in the cultivation, processing, and distribution of long grain rice. They can be found worldwide, and they offer different types of long grain rice, including brown and white rice, organic and non-organic, and a variety of brands. Many suppliers also offer additional services such as packaging and shipping. Long grain rice suppliers play a crucial role in the rice industry, especially as the demand for this type of rice continues to rise.

The differences between long grain rice suppliers, wholesalers, and retailer

Long grain rice suppliers are responsible for sourcing, processing, and distributing the rice to wholesalers and retailers. Wholesalers buy large quantities of rice from suppliers and sell it to retailers, who then sell smaller amounts to customers. Long grain rice suppliers generally have the advantage of offering fresher and higher quality rice due to their direct involvement in the production and processing.

Long grain rice suppliers, wholesalers, and retailers

Understanding rice suppliers is essential for buyers to distinguish them from wholesalers and retailers. Rice suppliers have sources for products but need more networks to sell their goods, so they work with wholesalers who act as intermediaries to connect them with retailers or consumers.

Continuing with our discussion of long grain rice suppliers, we will now take a look at the long grain rice supplier market in the world, including the production and consumption of long grain rice in countries around the world, major long grain rice growing regions, production and export processes, and consumer consumption trends for long grain rice.

Top 3 countries with qualified long grain rice suppliers

Vietnam, Thailand, and India are among the top countries for long-grain rice production and supply. These countries are well-known for producing high-quality rice and have a significant presence in the global rice market. Many long-grain rice suppliers from these countries offer various rice products, including organic, inorganic, and brown and white rice.

Top 3 countries with qualified long grain rice suppliers

Among the three countries, Vietnam is a significant player in the global rice market, accounting for approximately 15% of the world’s total rice exports. Vietnam has exported rice to over 150 countries and territories, indicating that many rice suppliers and providers are likely operating in Vietnam.

The advantages of long grain rice suppliers in Vietnam

Vietnam is a significant exporter of long grain rice, with a long-standing reputation for producing high-quality rice. The country has ideal conditions for rice cultivation, including a warm climate and abundant water resources. Additionally, long grain rice suppliers in Vietnam often offer competitive prices, making them an attractive option for businesses looking to source rice.

Flavor, Quality & Safety

Long grain rice in Vietnam has a natural fragrance and distinctive taste, highly valued for its quality. This is mainly due to the cultivation and care methods of Vietnamese farmers, combined with the soil and climate of the region.

Vietnamese rice has high nutritional content, especially for types of rice such as ST rice, sticky rice, and glutinous rice. These types of rice contain many essential nutrients for health, such as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.

They are usually produced on farms in rural areas, without using many chemicals and pesticides, ensuring consumer safety.

Competitive price

Vietnamese rice is affordable compared to other types of rice in the world. Competitive price makes long grain rice suppliers in Vietnam an attractive choice for domestic and international consumers.

Vietnam is one of the largest countries in rice production and exports. The country has achieved high production levels and competitive prices for rice compared to other rice-producing countries. According to the statistics of Kinh te & Do thi Ha Noi newspaper, in the first half of February 2023, the average price of Vietnam’s 5% broken rice for export was 473 USD/ton, which is lower than the prices of Thailand (493 USD/ton) and Pakistan (483 USD/ton). Additionally, the cost of Vietnamese rice is lower than that of other countries, such as Brazil (608 USD/ton) and the United States (644 USD/ton).

Competitive price

It is noteworthy that Vietnamese rice has successfully entered complex markets such as Europe, South Korea, Japan, Arab countries, China, the Philippines, and Africa. Notably, fragrant rice ST24 and ST25 have been exported to many countries at prices more than twice that of ordinary white rice. Besides, many markets, such as China, the Philippines, and Africa, still significantly demand rice imports from Vietnam. This shows that Vietnamese rice is being sold at competitive and cheaper prices than rice from other countries.

Vietnamese rice has many different types, from ST rice, sticky rice, glutinous rice to red rice, brown rice, etc., to meet consumers’ diverse needs and preferences.

5 things you should notice when choosing long grain rice suppliers (Good & Bad Signs)

When choosing a long grain rice supplier, paying attention to several factors is essential.

Business licenses and address

Rice suppliers with good reputations are open about their business licenses and location. To demonstrate their reliability, they must display the business licenses of competent national authorities. To ensure the authenticity of their reputation, the exact addresses of their offices and factories are necessary. Long grain rice suppliers should provide this essential information on their website or company profile.

Certificates to ensure product quality

Trustworthy rice suppliers possess the appropriate certifications to guarantee the quality of their products. As rice is a staple food for many nations, it must meet national and international standards. To confirm the quality of the rice, a list of relevant certificates is necessary. Typically, reputable rice suppliers hold fundamental certifications such as FDA for the American region, JAS from Japan, ISO, and Global GAP for other countries.

Certificates to ensure product quality

A reputable long grain rice supplier should have a reliable source of high-quality rice and should be able to provide customers with consistent and competitive pricing.

Reviews from previous wholesalers, retailers, or customers

Positive reviews are critical indicators of a reliable long grain rice supplier. When you’re considering a supplier, take some time to research their reputation and see what previous customers have to say about their products and services. Look for reviews on the supplier’s website, social media pages, or third-party review sites.

If a supplier has many positive reviews, it indicates that they are trustworthy and provide quality products and services. Positive reviews often mention factors such as the freshness of the rice, competitive pricing, fast and reliable delivery, and responsive customer service.

It is essential to bear in mind that not all reviews are authentic. Some suppliers may manipulate their online reputation by posting fake positive reviews or hiring people to write them. To avoid falling for these tactics, read reviews from various sources and look for patterns in the feedback.

Unreliable delivery is one of the alarming signs that you should be aware of when choosing a long grain rice supplier. Delayed or missed deliveries can cause many problems for your business or household. It can result in you needing more rice to fulfill orders, or it could mean that you need more rice altogether, which can be very inconvenient. This can lead to unhappy customers or family members and ultimately damage your reputation.

When selecting a long grain rice supplier, ask about their delivery policies and timelines. Find out if they have a system to ensure that deliveries are made on time and what steps they take if there are any delays or issues with delivery. It is essential to choose a supplier that is transparent about their delivery process and that takes responsibility for any problems that may arise.

It is also essential to consider the shipping distance when choosing a long grain rice supplier. A supplier far from your business or household may have longer shipping time and be more prone to delays. In contrast, a supplier located closer to you may have shorter shipping times and be more reliable in delivery.

By choosing a reliable long grain rice supplier with a good delivery track record, you can ensure that your rice orders are always fulfilled on time, which will help keep your business or household running smoothly.

Customer service

Customer service is a crucial aspect to consider when choosing a long grain rice supplier. A supplier with good customer service can help ensure that any issues or concerns are addressed promptly and professionally. This helps build trust between the supplier and the buyer, leading to a more positive and long-lasting business relationship.

Some indicators of good customer service from a rice supplier include clear communication, responsiveness to inquiries and concerns, and a willingness to work with the buyer to resolve any issues. It’s also helpful if the supplier provides detailed product information and offers suggestions or recommendations based on the buyer’s needs.

On the other hand, poor customer service can lead to frustration, delays, and even loss of business. Signs of subpar customer service from a long grain rice supplier can include unresponsiveness to inquiries, lack of follow-up, and a general lack of interest in the buyer’s needs. It’s essential to note how the supplier handles communication and customer service, as this can significantly impact the success of the buyer-supplier relationship.

Where to find long grain rice suppliers?

Long grain rice suppliers can be found online through various sources, including business directories, trade publications, and industry associations. Other than face-to-face meetings, or recommendations from other businesses in the industry, it’s also possible to find suppliers through social media and marketplaces.

Social media

In addition to the sources mentioned, wholesalers, retailers, or consumers can use social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Facebook to find long grain rice suppliers. Many suppliers have profiles and pages on these platforms, allowing potential customers to connect with them and learn more about their products and services.

Another option is to use online marketplaces and platforms such as Alibaba and Global Sources, which connect buyers with suppliers worldwide. These platforms often have various rice products and information about each supplier’s location, production capabilities, and customer ratings.

It’s important to note that when searching for long grain rice suppliers, buyers should always conduct due diligence to ensure that the supplier is reputable and reliable. This can involve researching the supplier’s history, checking their certifications and licenses, and verifying their production and delivery capabilities. By doing so, buyers can find a high-quality and trustworthy supplier that meets their specific needs and requirements.

How to connect and work with long grain rice suppliers?

Connecting and working with long grain rice suppliers typically involves establishing a business relationship through communication and negotiations. It’s important to discuss pricing, payment terms, delivery schedules, and any other relevant factors before committing to a supplier. Maintaining open lines of communication is also crucial for building a successful partnership with a supplier.

Wholesalers should follow recommended steps to order from long grain rice suppliers.

Creating a list of reputable long grain rice suppliers

First, buyers can find reliable suppliers through various channels, including E-commerce platforms, agriculture fairs, rice trading forums, and other networks. Buyers should also verify the quality of goods, business licenses, and certificates to avoid scammers. After that, list the names of potential suppliers.

Contacting & Meeting

Afterward, contact the long grain rice supplier via Whatsapp or email. It is better to arrange a direct meeting with the supplier for further discussion.

Negotiating price & signing contract

When negotiating prices, buyers should ask for clarification on additional fees and mention long-term benefits and partnerships to convince suppliers. The contract is a critical document representing the legal cooperation between both parties, and it’s essential for both parties to carefully review all the requirements written in the contract before making a final decision.

Product, delivery, payment and documents terms

Before signing a commercial contract, the seller and the buyer must agree on the following terms:

  • Product terms: type of product, quantity, and specifications.
  • Delivery terms: both the supplier and the buyer must agree on the INCOTERM used in the contract. An acronym for “International Commercial Terms,” INCOTERM comprises 11 standard trade terms widely used to facilitate international B2B transactions of goods. FOB and CNF have commonly used terms in the international trade of medium grain rice. As per INCOTERM 2010, the importer must book the vessel and pay the shipping fee if the contract uses the FOB term. However, if the CNF term is used, the exporter is responsible for vessel booking. Choosing the proper delivery term ensures a smooth and hassle-free transaction.
  • Payment terms: T/T, L/C, D/P, or mixed payment methods.
  • Document terms: An agricultural export order will require the following documents:
  1. Bill of lading (BL): a legally binding document that a transportation company provides to a shipper containing information about the type, quantity, and intended destination of the goods being transported. It is proof of shipment receipt issued when the carrier delivers the goods to their predetermined destination. Irrespective of the mode of transportation, the bill of lading must accompany the shipped products and be signed by an authorized representative from the carrier, shipper, and receiver. It is an important document that ensures goods’ safe and accurate delivery.
  2. Commercial Invoice: This is an invoice issued by the seller, used to show the value of the order.
  3. Packing list: A packing list issued by the seller shows the number of packages and the weight of the goods loaded onto the ship.
  4. Certificate of Origin: The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry issued a certificate of origin. They were used to prove the origin of the goods and to receive import tax incentives.
  5. Certificate of Phytosanitary: A plant quarantine certificate issued by the Plant Protection Department. Used to prove that the agricultural products are safe, free from contamination, pests, and diseases, and have been tested for quality.
  6. Certificate of Fumigation: A certificate issued by a third-party inspection company for pest control to prove that the agricultural products have been thoroughly disinfected before export.
  7. Certificate of Quality and Quantity: A certificate issued by a third-party inspection company for quantity and quality and used to show the actual quantity and quality of the delivered goods.
  8. Other special documents: Depending on the country, additional special documents may be required, such as Health certificates and Certificates of Conformity. Therefore, buyers need to check carefully with customs in the importing country.

In terms of payment, it’s common for the entire order value to be paid in two installments (before and after receiving goods) to avoid scams. Consulting with professionals can help ensure effective payment methods based on specific circumstances.

In international trade, three payment methods are commonly used.

The first method is L/C or Letter of Credit, which involves a bank guaranteeing payment for both the buyer and seller. Once the buyer’s bank confirms that all transaction terms and conditions have been met, payment is authorized to the exporter. This payment method is beneficial when the buyer has a limited credit history, as it ensures payment. Importers benefit from this payment method as they are only required to pay once they receive their shipment of medium grain rice.

The second payment method is D/P or Documents Against Payment. This is when the seller fulfills their delivery obligation, prepares the shipping documents, and asks the bank to collect the payment stated on the draft with the agreed-upon terms and conditions. If the buyer pays or accepts payment, the bank hands over all shipping documents to the buyer, allowing them to receive their shipment of medium grain rice.

The final payment method is T/T or Telegraphic Transfer, which involves the bank transferring a specified amount of money to the beneficiary using money transfer technologies such as Swift or telex.

Some payment methods

In transferring money, there are two methods available.

The first is Prepaid Money Transfer, in which the importer pays the exporter a certain amount of money before the shipment.

The second method is T/T after shipment, wherein the importer pays the exporter after they have received the consignment of medium grain rice types.

Receiving products and giving feedback

Once delivered, buyers should check the quantity and quality of the product to ensure common fulfillment. If the product conditions and quality do not meet buyers’ requirements, they should contact the long grain rice supplier as soon as possible for further discussion.
